Hard to believe we’ve lost Alice Coltrane, Andrew Hill and Max Roach in the past eight months. On the other hand, given the tragically short lives of many of the musicians Coltrane, Hill and Roach played with (and, in Coltrane’s case, were married to), it’s somehow less sad to be farewelling somebody who was in his eighties. Still bloody sad, tho. Roach was one of the greats.
