Helen, you may be interested in this report, to add weight to further letters to the Brumby government. It was released yesterday, and you may have heard of it already. Apparently, Victoria has one of the world's highest environmental footprints - especially in terms of consumption. We consume way too much petrol, energy and water, and are losing biodiversity and vegetation at terrible rates.

Ah, The annoying S. Newnham. You know, an up-and-coming Labor hack of the same name caused much grief at the University and Student representative body I was at some decade and a half ago (more, if I really thought about it). Unsigned, unattributed ‘dirt sheets’ on political opponents were the preferred modus operandi of that minor political moment. Not so minor now, but you know where they get they’re training, of course.

I wish I hadn’t thrown out all those Student Representative body documents with my last house move. but some of us have the memories of elephants…

Oh, repost away! And I encourage anyone looking at this to do so, too!
It’s important that as many people as possible become aware of what’s happening, and annoy the government about it.

They don’t care about old growth forests, dominated by the Right as they are, so the message should be

ELECTION PROMISE BROKEN

FAIL.

With a side serve of “you lot are so gone at the next election.”

I’m worried that if I start writing to Brumby now it will unclog the dam and lead to an outpouring of anger and disappointment. There are so many things I’ve been angered and disappointed about with Brumby’s government – dastardly poor public transport, clearways threatening local strip shopping and neighbourhood communities, a bias toward roads and highways, a wearing-away of transparency and democracy in govt, and now this …

Oh I so, so hear you.
That’s why my letter -writing has threatened to get out of control lately.
Now “S. Newnham” is at it again letterboxing with anti-Green propaganda in the Council elections. Aaargh. (Sorry, non-victorian people. (Shrilly) That was a local comment, for local people! There’s nothing for you here!)

I write letters too! Only mine have been about climate change and to the Rudd government. This time, though, I'm worried that if I start writing to Brumby now it will unclog the dam and lead to an outpouring of anger and disappointment. I feel a right-ol' jeremiad coming on. Beware, Helen, you may be responsible for inspiring a letter-writing crank. Electorate officers and Ministerial staff will come to groan and roll their eyeballs when they open their mail... By the way, Helen, knowing your fondness for trees and forests, and previous interest expressed in the carnival, I thought you'd be interested in writing something for the next (December) Festival of Trees, with submissions due 29 November. Something about old-growth forests and government betrayal, perhaps? I would like to learn more about these gorgeous giants. We here about the Styx a lot, but less about Victoria's forests. I'm still trying to decide what I'll write on. Something tropical, perhaps.
